Starving Artist is a new downloadable single by Adam WarRock, a new, geek savvy, hip hop artist. In the last few months on his website, he's been offering free tracks for download as he hones his craft. In fact, Starving Artist is also free, or alternatively, the consumer can donate an amount of their own choosing. Adam WarRock recently quit his day job as a lawyer in the Washington DC area in order to pursue a career in hip hop. Certainly this is the road less travelled, and a bold move that puts me in mind of another artist swimming against the stream.

Adam WarRock is also known as Eugene Ahn. He is one of the co-hosts of a podcast called War Rocket Ajax, which dabbles loosely in the comic book world, along with Chris Sims, author of the Invincible Super-blog and writer for Comics Alliance.

Eugene was also the host of another podcast called People You Don't Know (PYDK). You may recall that our illustrious leader, Jessica Stover was interviewed by Eugene about the Artemis Eternal project. He is a genuinely interesting person and obviously shares some of the artistic vision championed by the members of our community. As a friend of the Wingmen, it seems appropriate to alert you to Eugene's exploits and give you an opportunity to check them out for yourself.

Who knows? Maybe we can even convince him to lay down a Wingman track dissing the Wimps.

Reed Richards is a Wingman

Mr. Fantastic calls out the scientific community, but many believe it is a condemnation of the comics industry and media as a whole by the writer, Jonathan Hickman, who is a bit of a radical, fresh voice in mainstream comics.

The People You Don't Know

Given that I often have to spend a lot of hours in the car for work, I've taken to listening to a number of podcasts to help pass the time. One of the podcasts I've taken to listening to lately is The People You Don't Know which is produced and hosted by Eugene Ahn. Eugene is a lawyer based in the DC area and the basic premise of the show is he interviews interesting guests who you probably haven't heard of, but who are passionate about what they do. He then asks the guest to recommend someone else for him to talk to, effectively creating a chain of interviews.

Fortunately for us, though, Eugene sometimes also reaches out to the listeners for suggestions on who to speak with, and so it was that I fired off a quick email suggesting Jessica for the show. In relatively short order, Eugene and Jess connected and the show featuring the interview has just gone up.

I haven't listened to the show yet (I have a long drive tomorrow morning), so I can't comment on it, but having listened to PYDK for a while, I can honestly say I'm looking forward to it. Special thanks to Eugene and I encourage everyone to check out a couple episodes. Also, if at all possible, please rate and leave a review on iTunes for PYDK as it moves the podcast up in the rankings and helps them to find new listeners.

iPhun: Pollice verso on Apps

Let's face it, like anything in the new media realm these days, there is a lot of noise to cut through to find those golden nuggets of true value. Luckily, for those seeking out the latest and greatest in iPhone and iTouch apps, help is just a click away, courtesy of your fellow Wingmen.

iPhun is a new website featuring Wingmen Sean Bonner (host), Tara Brown (producer), Rudy Jahchan (director) and Jason Defillipo (guest host), where you can find short episodes which review the latest apps and their recommendation on whether it's a hit or a miss.

It's very well done, but don't take my word for it. Check out iPhun for youself.

I stumbled onto an interesting article over at Galactic Watercooler yesterday:

"If there’s one thing we’re good at as sci-fi fans, it’s second-guessing story creators. Every writer’s room decision echos across the ‘net: “That was a horrible choice! They totally should have… If I were the writer, I would have…” Purefold — envisioned as the first large-scale, open media sci-fi franchise — asks us to put our time and effort where our (collective) mouth is. They’re handing us the responsibility of developing the story and universe — and giving fan fic a whole new meaning.

All Purefold content will be released under a Creative Commons License, thereby allowing all related content and intellectual property to be recycled back into the community. Anyone may create their own content for the franchise, so long as it is released under the same conditions, though studios will likely create the bulk of the content. While RSA’s pool of directors will be tasked with bringing these stories to life, Purefold is challenging the fans to create the stories.

The business model for Purefold is an unconventional one, too. Purefold’s financial support will (hopefully) come from brands, but not in the traditional product placement sense. Instead, Purefold will populate the story universe with prototype or concept products, turning the franchise into a product development and testing tool for financeers. And by avoiding current, recognizable products, Purefold hopes these placements will seem less obtrusive to the audience."

I popped on over to the Purefold site and watched the video there. At first glance, one might think that Purefold has a lot in common with the Artemis Eternal project. Upon further examination, however, it is far more confusing. On top of that, Purefold does not seem to be 'pure' at all. What I have taken away from the concept is this:

1. Purefold/Ag8 has replaced studio funding with extensive product placement.

2. The products won't be things that currently exist, so it's not so much selling the community something, but using the community as a focus group to see where they will get the most bang for their buck.

3. The content produced by Purefold will fall under the Creative Commons, so community users can use/mash the content as they see fit. In truth though, this seems like an empty gift since there is no real way for anyone to police the use of their content on the web anyway.

4. Purefold will use social media to collect ideas, concepts, etc, and find out what the masses are gravitating towards, or what is popular. Industry professionals will then harvest those ideas, etc, to make the content, with no compensation going to the originators.

5. Purefold will produce content/stories/eposodic films which are essentially consumer created commercials. Basically, the audience is telling the brands who are funding the content how to best sell them their products.

Are you inspired?

It's true that many people are armchair critics, and believe they could do it better. What needs to be realized, however, is that it's not that there is not better content out there. There are professionals and artists aplenty, who have devoted their lives to the pursuit of making movies, and who are very skilled in their craft. The problem is in the Hollywood production and distribution model, that prevents true creation, and true storytelling, to reach the audience. Hollywood today is about getting asses in the seats, and not necessarily delivering the goods once they have them there.

Purefold seems to be primarily about pandering to the mob. Giving them what they want. This shouldn't necessarily strike one as being the best way in which to produce quality storytelling, or art.

Do you see some merit in this model? What are your thoughts?

According to SCI-FI president Dave Howe: "We need to position our brand to compete more effectively in a fiercely competitive, multi-platform, multi-media and global world. To do that we have to be able to differentiate or separate our brand from a generic category." "Also, we need to grow our business beyond just being a cable channel. We want to extend our brand into new businesses, such as gaming, films or the youth market." "While continuing to embrace our legacy and our core audience, we needed to cultivate a distinct point of view with a name that we could own that invites more people in and reflects our broader range of programming."
Even though the overwhelming majority of their core audience opposes the name change-- and the network knows this, SCI-FI is changing the name anyway. Translation: they care more about their "brand" power & positioning than their audience or the genre.

SciFi Wire - Push for Artemis Story

Had a brief e-mail exchange with Jess the other day and as a result I sent the following e-mail to SciFi Wire to try and get them to do a story on Artemis:

I am a 39-year-old Information Technology Consultant and Science Fiction/Fantasy fan writing to you today to recommend an outstanding story for SciFi Wire – Jessica Mae Stover and her Artemis Eternal project. When I find an author, movie, or show that I truly enjoy I market it to friends, family, and whoever else will listen. For example, I talked up Joss Whedon’s Firefly and purchased multiple copies of the series DVDs for family. Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert, recently called Firefly “one of the best TV shows aired.”

I feel just as passionately about Ms. Stover’s project, Artemis Eternal. Artemis Eternal is the revolutionary, premier, crowd-funded, professionally-led, studio-quality scifi/fantasy film with absolutely no studio intervention. This unprecedented approach to production tackles issues of media consolidation, independence, and a lack of diversity and story purity in cinema. It is, quite simply, an anti-JarJar Binks movement made possible by a growing host of movie-going audience members dubbed “Wingmen” who are responsible for much of the Artemis Eternal financing, marketing, and enthusiasm. Back when Jess started The Silver Legacy Eventful demands (newer Wingmen may not have heard of it), one of the reoccurring themes we stressed was that TSL is not based on an existing book, game, comic, or other work. Her and our point was that Hollywood keeps recycling the same old tired crap again and again and doesn't take chances on anything new or original.

Yesterday and today, the following headlines crossed my desk:

Total Recall—the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi action movie based on a Philip K. Dick story—may be headed for a remake, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
A reboot of the classic 1984 fantasy movie The Neverending Story is in the early stages of development at Warner Brothers under the Kennedy/Marshall Co. and Leonard DiCaprio's Appian Way, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Warner Brothers is developing a film based on the DC Comics property Suicide Squad for Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes) to produce as a potential franchise, Variety reported.
Sara Paxton, who stars in the upcoming remake of Wes Craven's controversial revenge horror film The Last House on the Left, told SCI FI Wire that the film is "something very special" and not just another entry in Hollywood's seemingly endless remake sweepstakes.

Four remake headlines in a single day - two of which are announcements of remakes! We don't even need to make our point, as Hollywood continues to make it for us. The draft Wingman Manifesto states, "The specter of commercialism has long hung over the film industry, but of late it has evolved into a fog of bureaucracy and materialism, of plastic cups and bad advertisements. The artist is obscured, and the audience is force-fed cheap ideas devoid of any purpose. There is no truth, no depth, in something so manufactured, and it must end."

The world must change. We must make it change. Where is our righteous indignation?

Hopefully we can properly credit all the Wingmen featured there and in the video and get to know who's who in the zoo.

Hey, remember that time after AAE went to Comic-Con and we submitted a bunch of videos and audio and such to Jess for a Wingman Summer/Autumn update? Then Jess' iMovie killed the edit and she had to start all over? Well guess what, Wingmen? It's done now! It's called The WINGMEN: Veins of History and it's wonderful! And it's posted on JSDC! Go watch it! Exclamation point! Also, notice the WC shoutout at 1:24.
This is the video compilation that inspired the HD shoots this winter. Now I can see why. Wingmen are awesome. Like ninjas or Jedi. No difference.

Tom Zarek Speaks

Galactica Watercooler, which is a website, forum and weekly podcast dedicated to all things Batttlestar Galactica and other bits of sci-fi-fandom, just posted a two hour interview with Richard Hatch, the actor who played Apollo in the original series and portrays Tom Zarek in the reimagining. Listening to the interview, I was a bit surprised at how well spoken the man was and it was evident that he is perhaps one of the biggest fans of BSG out there. In the latter half of the interview they also touched on such issues as the current state of art in the entertainment industry, new media, and other things that may be of interest to Wingmen and followers of the Artemis Eternal project. The interivew is also available via iTunes, so it's a good listen on your iPod while commuting, etc.

Jess Mixes It Up at #SMCLA

Perhaps a more fitting definition for the new moniker Hollywood 2.0 would be the trend of studios abandoning original content in favour of remaking movies that were perfectly fine the first time around.

"Stephen Norrington has signed on to write and direct a reinvention of “The Crow,” based on the comic created by James O’Barr.

Ryan Kavanaugh’s Relativity Media is negotiating with producer Ed Pressman to acquire the film franchise and finance the film.

Pressman produced the 1994 Alex Proyas-directed screen transfer, in which rock musician Eric Draven is murdered trying to rescue his girlfriend from thugs, and returns from the dead one year later to exact vengeance. Though the original became a gothic-style hit that grossed nearly $100 million worldwide, it is primarily remembered for a tragic accident in which star Brandon Lee was killed during filming.

For Norrington, “The Crow” deal marks the end of a long screen sabbatical. After making his breakthrough with the Marvel Comics hero “Blade,” Norrington took on a big-budget comic transfer with “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.” Neither the director nor his star, Sean Connery, has made a film since."

Undoubtedly, Wingmen far and wide have been touched by the void left on television thanks to the hiatus of Battlestar Galactica midway through its final season. However, every drought must eventually come to an end, and so it shall soon too for BSG. Only 31 days to go until the final episodes hit the airwaves. The first drops of relief have started to fall already with the release of the first two webisodes of the ten-part The Face of the Enemy. Be Wingman Central's Belated Comic-Con Correspondent

Comic-Con 2008. The Artemis Eternal crew went, saw, and conquered. Hell....it got Jess so pumped it spawned the Make It Contagious Summer Update. Don't believe me? Ask Chewbacca. He ain't just Han Solo's wingwookie anymore.

Now.....Jess has given us her take on her experience at Comic-Con as an exhibitor, but certainly there are Wingmen out there (perhaps newly minted) who were there as consumers of all things awesome. Jess laid down the law in her latest blog post. So seriously, kids, what's it going to be? Are we just going to let this whole thing die because we've gotten too comfortable just sitting in front of our computers, occasionally checking the AAE site, thinking we've done enough? Our name is on the list, so we're good? No, that's not how it works. Link up, get your butts in the forum and let's figure this out! No more sitting around- GO!
... And I mean that in the most polite way possible.

Also, I know at least one person was having trouble getting registered for the forum, so if that's the case for you, leave a comment or send an email and we'll see what we can do to get you in there.

Things are always slow to reach the Great White North. Things like the 80's. Or super-rad Artemis Eternal Comic-Con '08 Wingman t-shirts.

Yet, while some have yet to receive their sweet loot, word on the street is that many mailboxes in the US and elsewhere have been full of a little more awesome lately. In fact, Wingman Central has recently come into exclusive and groundbreaking photographic evidence of t-shirt wearing Wingmen in the wild.

First of all, to understand what Wingman Central is all about, you must be familiar with the information in the FAQ. If you are new to the Wingman concept, please read that section first.

So, you want to stand up and join the quest for better movies. Excellent! You've come to the right place.

Wingman Central was created collaboratively by four Wingmen: Dave G, Sean Stubblefield, Katie Durham, and High Lord Captain Curt Sawyer (yes, he requested that title, and no, I don't think he expected me to actually use it). Although these four started WC, it does not belong to them; it belongs to all of us. Site content is open-ended. If you want to share something, by all means share it! You can discuss issues and get to know your fellow Wingmen in the comments, on the Yaplet chat, and in the WC Forums. If you want to share content for the main blog, contact the administrators. Participation is strongly encouraged. Don't worry - you will be welcomed here.

Wingman Central is intended to function as a meeting place for the JSDC community to socialize and communicate about our projects. Look around, see what there is to see. Here Wingmen can collaborate on ideas, discuss where our efforts would or would not be well-spent, celebrate our successes, and generally operate as a strong, unified group rather than uncoordinated individuals. This is not a fan site. This is a hub of activity for people who take action to support change in filmmaking. It's time to man-up.

Our current mission, as you likely already know, is Jessica Mae Stover's scifi/fantasy short film, Artemis Eternal. You can find more information on the beautifully crafted Artemis Eternal website, specifically the FAQ there. We can't expect this to happen while we just sit around and watch. We need to jump in and work for it. Spread the word in your blogs, your social networking sites, local newspapers, bulletin boards, favorite websites, workplace, friends, family, random strangers you pass on the street, whatever! Just get it out there. This is a whole new approach to moviemaking. If you find a method that seems to work, let us know. Post in the forum, leave a comment, contribute an article for the blog. Get active! This is where it's at, people. This is the future.

Q: What is Wingman Central?

A: Wingman Central is an Internets-hub created by and for supporters of cinematic renegade/web personality Jessica Mae Stover. Its mandate is to organize the Wingmen into a cohesive community that can more effectively increase awareness about Jessica's online/filmmaking projects.

Q: And Jessica Mae Stover is who, exactly?

A: Jessica Mae Stover (a.k.a. JSto) is the plucky lass behind the website Jessica Stover Dot Com (JSDC). Jess has a more detailed biography on her website, but what is important to know is that she is an innovative and talented writer/filmmaker who is challenging the traditional studio model of filmmaking by empowering the audience (YOU!) to become a Wingman and be a part of the process. Unless, of course, you would rather simply hand over your money to Hollywood suits for the next Catwoman.

Q: So....who are these "Wingmen"?

A: Wingmen are the non-wimps who have rallied to Jess' vision of a "pure" movie-going experience; one that doesn't involve studio interference but still delivers a high-quality, professional product. They are everyday people from all walks of life and from all parts of the globe who have had enough of the Hollywood status quo and want to see a return to original material that hasn't been adapted from the latest and hottest book, video game or comic. Most importantly, however, Wingmen are those who take action in support of Jess' projects and story-telling philosophy, choosing not to sit on the sidelines while Tinseltown churns out more crap (see latest Star Wars production).

Q: Who can become a Wingman?

A: Anyone. Unless they're a wimp. Or Michael Bay. We can't risk that whatever he has is contagious.

Q: What types of things can I expect to see on Wingman Central?

A: Content on Wingman Central will include news and information related to Jess' projects primarily, but will hopefully also be a forum to share thoughts on media distribution and methods of promotion, filmmaking and any other topics that are relevant to our goals. It may also celebrate some of the media (movies, books, etc) that Wingmen believe are examples of excellence.

Q: Can I contribute content to the site?

A: The Wingman Central Forum is available for all Wingmen to share and discuss all manner of topics with each other. If you would like to become a contributing author for Wingman Central, submit your stories to wingmancentral@gmail.com. If it passes muster, we'll post it on the site with appropriate credit......and if you are a regular contributor and a Wingman in good standing, it may transition into a more permanent role. Wingmen who would like to contribute in other ways, possessing sweet skills in web design, fan art, or nunchucks are also welcome.
